What is DHEA?

DHEA, short for dehydroepiandrosterone, is a natural hormone made by all women and men as an intermediate step in a complex process, called steroidogenesis. During steroidogenesis, in a step-by-step manner, cholesterol is converted into the male and female sex hormones, testosterone and estradiol. DHEA is one of the steps between cholesterol and male/female sex hormones in this process.

As women (and men) age, male hormones (also called androgens), including the hormones DHEA and testosterone, decline. Because our bodies make testosterone from DHEA, testosterone declines in parallel with DHEA and vice-versa. As has now been known for over a decade, good testosterone levels are, however, essential for good ovarian function. If testosterone falls below a certain threshold, ovaries produce fewer and poorer quality eggs, a major reasons why older women and some younger women with low testosterone levels become infertile. In the most severe cases, low testosterone can stop egg maturation in ovaries altogether and even produce a clinical picture that mimics early menopause.

Fertility Nutraceuticals’ FERTINATAL® fertility-specific DHEA supports androgen production in the body, thereby improving the maturation process of eggs in the ovaries*.
